Most citizens want the new government to prioritize action on the cost of living
A new post-election survey by YouGov reveals that 56% of Singaporeans are satisfied with the outcome of the recently concluded 2025 General Election, with half of the population (50%) feeling optimistic about the country’s future under the newly elected government.
However, optimism varies significantly by age. Baby Boomers are the most satisfied with the election outcome (62%), while Gen Z voters are the least, with only 47% expressing approval. In terms of outlook, just 37% of Gen Z respondents say they feel optimistic about the future under the new government—compared to 50% of Millennials and 56% of Baby Boomers.
When asked about their vote in this election, 41% of respondents said they voted for the People's Action Party (PAP). A notable 36% chose not to disclose their vote, while 9% reported voting for the Workers’ Party (WP). Support for other parties was minimal in comparison.
Key Influencing Factors in Voter Decision-Making
The most significant influence on voting decisions was the track record of the party or candidate (40%). This was followed by the party’s manifesto (21%) and the personality or character of the candidate (15%).
Among PAP voters in the 2025 election, more than half (52%) said their decision was primarily based on the party’s track record. In contrast, PSP voters were more likely to be influenced by the party’s manifesto (38%), while SDP voters prioritized their choice on the candidate’s personality and character (54%).
Top Election Issues
The cost of living emerged as the most pressing issue for voters across the board, with 48% saying the party they voted for in the 2025 election addressed it effectively. Housing affordability (27%) and the Goods & Services Tax (25%) were other areas that their chosen parties handled well.
Interestingly, voters who supported opposition parties—including the Workers’ Party (WP), Progress Singapore Party (PSP), and Singapore Democratic Party (SDP)—were more likely to say their chosen parties addressed these issues effectively, compared to those who voted for the People’s Action Party.
PAP voters, on the other hand, were more likely to say the party performed well in addressing issues related to economic stability.
Priorities for the New Government
Looking ahead, Singaporeans want the new government to prioritise action on the cost of living, with 65% identifying it as the top issue requiring attention. This is followed by housing affordability and availability (29%), healthcare, and economic stability (each cited by around 25% of respondents).
Among PAP voters, there is particular emphasis on the government’s continued focus on economic growth, alongside tackling other major concerns.
Methodology
YouGov interviewed 1533 Singaporean citizens aged 21 years and above between May 4 and 9, 2025. The effective margin of error on this survey is ±3.099%. YouGov conducts its polling using active sampling techniques from our online panel. When using Active Sampling, restrictions are put in place to ensure that only the people contacted are allowed to participate. We target specific demographics to ensure that the final sample is representative of the population by age, gender, ethnicity, and electorate. This approach is used for YouGov polling globally.
