Every start of a new calendar year presents an opportunity for reflection on months past, and resolutions for what we want to achieve in the coming ones. In this article, we dive into the goals that APAC’s denizens most want to achieve in 2023 – and how they vary across genders, generations and geography.
What do consumers in APAC most want to achieve in 2023?
Latest data from YouGov Surveys show that almost three in five of APAC’s consumers (59%) say they plan to improve their physical health in 2023 – the region’s top New Year resolution. Better money management this year is also on the minds of consumers in APAC, with over half (54%) setting it as a goal this year.
Over two in five also hope to improve their mental health and spend more time with family and friends (both 43%) in 2023. Meanwhile, a third seek to travel more this year (32%), rounding out the region’s top five resolutions.
Where do APAC’s consumers most differ from AMERS and EMEA in their 2023 resolutions?
Compared to other global regions, consumers in APAC are much more likely to say better money management is on their list of 2023 goals (54%) than consumers in AMERS (40%) and EMEA (29%).
And while over two in five in APAC say spending more time with family and friends is one of their New Year resolutions, less than a third in AMERS (31%) and EMEA (30%) say the same. Spending less time on the phone is also a significantly more common New Year resolution in APAC (28%) compared to AMERS and EMEA (both 16%).
What are the key gender and generational differences in APAC’s 2023 New Year resolutions?
Within APAC, men are more likely than women to say reducing or stopping their consumption of alcohol is one of their resolutions for the new year (+9%). But women are more likely than men to list improvements in mental health (+5%), more travelling (+5%) and spending less time on the phone (+5%) as goals they are seeking to accomplish in 2023.
Across generations, improving physical health and better money management are the two most popular new year goals. But while improving mental health is the third most popular 2023 resolution for younger consumers (Gen Z and Millennials), it’s spending more time with family and friends that’s in third place among older consumers (Gen X and Baby Boomers).
